Four score and seven years ago--OK, it was actually a lot longer ago than that. Abraham Lincoln was president during the country's Civil War. He was and is still a favorite of Americans because he had simple beginnings, being born to a poor family in a log house. Not only did he settle the American Civil War and regain control of the South, he also signed the Emancipation Proclamation which abolished slavery in the U.S.

America's first president, Washington was a commander-in-chief in the Revolutionary War before congress voted him as leader of the Executive Branch of the government. He set many of the ground rules for the U.S. government. He started the President's Cabinet and began the tradition of delivering an Inaugural Address. He was the one that decided that one person being president for too long would lead to corruption, so he handed the reins to John Adams and began the four-to-eight year allowance for presidency.
