This 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning photo was taken during the Sudan Famine. It sent a shock-wave through the entire world. The child was crawling to the United Nations food camp that was just one more kilometer away. But it's apparent that the child will not make it, and the vulture in the picture knows this. The photographer, Kevin Carter, left the scene as soon as the photo was taken. He has no idea what happened to the child, nor does anyone else. Carter committed suicide three months later.

This picture was taken and showed around the world in 1934, depicting a monster of legend; the Loch Ness Monster. “Nessie,” as it is called for short, has been rumored to live in the Loch Ness since 565. This picture made Nessie the object of tourism, research, and contradiction. However, interest in Nessie dwindled after Christian Spurling admitted the picture a fake made by his father, Marmaduke Wetherell. Together, they had made a wooden monster, Marmaduke took the picture, and they convinced Robert Kenneth Wilson, the village doctor, to tell the world he had shot the picture of the Loch Ness Monster.

Unlike most of the other photos in this poll, this photo is a happy one. Also set in New York City, USA, Lunch atop a Skyscraper (also known as New York Construction Workers Lunching on a Crossbeam) depicts eleven men eating lunch on a crossbeam hundreds of feet above the New York City street. Charles C. Ebbets took the photo on September 29, 2932 during the construction of the GE Building at Rockefeller Center. The photo showed up in the New York Herald Tribune in its Sunday photo supplement on October 2.

This photo was shot by the National Geographic photographer, Steve McCurry in 1984. The girl, Sharbat Gula, was one of the students in the informal school held in the refugee camp. McCurry never had much of a chance to photograph Afghan women, so he jumped on it when it came. At the time, Gula was only twelve years old. The next year, she made the cover of National Geographic. They found her again in 1992.

This is one of the most well-known photos of the world. It is the image of a student trying to stop the tanks standing in front of him in Tianamen Square in 1989. The tank driver did not crush him, but it didn't take long for the square to fill with blood. This photo showed the Chinese that there is hope for their country. Sadly, though, it is still under a communist regime.

In 1945, the US dropped a bomb in Hiroshima, Japan, killing about 80,000 people. But Japan did not surrender its place in the war. So, three days later, the US dropped another bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. It killed/injured 150,000 people this time. The powerful wind, extremely high temperature, and radiation caused huge long-term damage. This image depicts the now-classic mushroom cloud which shows the large amount of energy spread beneath it.

Set in 1930, this photo depicts two young black men who were accused of raping a white girl. They were hanged by a mob of 10,000 white men. The mob had taken them by force from the county jailhouse. A third black man avoided the lynching with the help of the girl's uncle, who said that he was innocent. The photo was intended to support white supremacy. But the mutilated bodies and grotequely happy crowds revolt most people who see the photo.

This picture was created in 2001. It became an internet phenomenon. Unfortunately, it is a Photoshopped piece. It depicts a tourist on the top of the World Trade Center in New York City, USA, with the plane in the background that is positioned to crash into the building. AT first, the picture was claimed to be a photo in a camera found at Ground Zero. This picture won a best 9/11 Photoshopped picture contest.
