One of America’s favorite movie genres is horror. We just love sitting on the edge of our seats, telling the character not to go in there, and watching them go in there, anyway. We love being scared out of our wits when something jumps out at us on the screen. It gives us a kind of adrenaline rush that can’t be replaced by any other genre of movie. Nothing can beat a good scare.

The Woman in Black is a movie based on the novel by Susan Hill. It follows the story of a man, Arthur Kipps (played by, you won't believe it, Daniel Radcliffe) as he goes to a remote town in the marshes to look through all of a recently-deceased-woman's documents in search of an alternate Will. His job depends on this venture, so he is determined to finish it. So he leaves London and his son with a nanny and finds himself in the beginning of a horrifying adventure. While he's in the town, the children of the town begin killing themselves. He also begins experiencing creepy things alone in the house. This movie is full of enough anticipation and creepiness to make your stomach turn.

The Shining focuses a lot on the psychological aspects of horror. The story goes that a man, Jack Torrance, is chosen to take care of a remote hotel during the winter. He brings his family with him and spends his days working on his book. But the hotel is haunted by the last man that had had Jack's job of taking care of the hotel. The man had gone crazy and killed his whole family viciously. Well, the same begins happening to Jack. The question is, does he succeed in murdering his wife and son as viciously as the other man had?

The Blair Witch Project is a movie filmed in the style of “found footage,” making it seem real and so that much scarier. The story revolves around three film students that had gone hiking in the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland in 1994 and disappeared. They had gone to film a local ghost story about the Blair Witch. What happened to them?

The Ring is a movie based on a Japanese film called “Ringu.” The film was based on the novel, Ringu, by Koji Suzuki (Suzuki helped co-write both films). It focuses on a woman, Rachel, who watched a cursed video tape. And let me tell you, that video tape is creepy. Full of seemingly random, disturbing images. After watching the tape, like everyone else who has watched the tape, Rachel receives a phone call. On the phone is a girl simply saying “seven days.” Rachel spends the next seven days experiencing nightmares and nose-bleeds as she tries to figure out the origins of this tape and how to prevent her own death. Like most horror movies, it ends up being a sad story of someone who was wronged.

Paranormal Activity follows a young couple, Katie and Micah, who start to be haunted by a demon. It's in the style of “found footage” from the camera the couple set up in different places around the house to prove to themselves that they are, indeed, being haunted. This “found footage” style makes the movie even scarier than it would be otherwise. Full of suspense and jump-out-at-you horror, along with some general freaky instances, this movie is beautifully terrifying.

Silent Hill is a movie based on the four video games of the same name. The film follows Rose, whose adopted daughter, Sharon, begins sleepwalking and having nightmares. Sharon screams out “Silent Hill” often during these nightly ventures. She gives in and takes Sharon to Silent Hill, where she loses her and begins on a terrifying search to find her. She finds the connection between Sharon and the horribly haunted town, and she doesn't like it. It's so full of creepiness and horrifying scenes and gruesome images. It's got almost everything a horror movie could need.

The Sixth Sense follows a young boy, Cole Sear, who has the ability to see and talk to the dead. He seeks the help of a child psychologist, Dr. Malcolm Crowe, who is having family issues. Malcolm had had a similar case to Cole's a while ago. A man by the name of Vincent Grey who had come to Malcolm's home and shot him in the abdomen. It's got plenty of gruesome and disturbing images and instances. There's also a huge catch to this movie that amplifies the horror. But you're going to have to watch it to see for yourself.

Saw is a graphic horror film directed by James Wan. The story focuses on Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Lawrence (Cary Elwes), two men chained in an underground bathroom. Each are given instructions over a mini audio tape on how to escape. Adam's told he must escape, and Lawrence is told he must kill Adam before a certain time (or else Lawrence's family will die). Meanwhile, the police are investigating similar cases and trying to find Lawrence and Adam before they are killed like the others. Will they find them in time? Will Adam and Lawrence escape? The tension in this movie is to die for.

The Poltergeist trilogy is famous for the little girl that the poltergeist(s) haunt, Carol Anne (played by Heather O'Rourke). It's almost famous for the rumors that circle around it about bad things happening on set all the time. The story follows the Freeling family as they are haunted by a group of ghosts. They are attracted to Carol Anne's life force, which they think will bring them to the “Light,” for, currently, they are under control of a demon named “Beast.” No matter where they go or what they day, the family continues to be terrorized. It is full scary and freaky scenes that will have you covering your eyes and peeking through your fingers.
