Collies are very well known for being smart and beautiful. With their mix of white, black, and sable or blue, they can really give you something nice to look at as they run. Originally herding dogs, they are excellent runners and are able to turn on a dime. Now, they make great and loving companions. They're great family dogs.

German shepherds, as the name implies, were originally herding dogs. Through the years, however, they have become known as great guard dogs. They're so good at this, in fact, that they are often employed by the U.S. police force. They take on different jobs like sniffing out drugs, criminals, and running after and attacking those criminals when they resist or run. They're a very loving pet and, when trained right, make a great family dog.

Poodles are one of the world's smartest breeds. But one wouldn't think that given their looks and reputation. With their lovely, curled fur in black, brown, or--most commonly--white, they are well known as a girly dog. This makes them seem like they're all looks and no brain. But that is so very wrong. They are easy to train and love to play. They were originally made for the water, their fur shaved except for around the vital organs. That's what caused the popular poodle cut of today. With these dogs' brains, they make a great family dog.

The labrador is one of America's favorite breeds. With short hair and good brains, they're easy to groom and train. They love to play and know how to be patient with children. You can even choose which color lab you want! Golden, black, and chocolate. They also love to swim. With all this gentleness and playfulness inside them, they're perfect for families!

As their name suggests, golden retrievers were used for hunting. When the hunter shoots down the bird, the golden retriever will go and get it. More often now, though, they're used as family pets. Patient and smart, they're great around children and are easy to train. Just don't forget to give your golden retriever a lot of exercise! They love walks and games of fetch. Another one of America's favorite dogs, the golden retriever will make a great addition to your home.

The King Charles cavalier is an adorable little toy spaniel. A favorite of the U.K., they are very friendly and affectionate. They are very patient with children and very adaptable to almost any living condition. These dogs were meant as hunting dogs, so they will need lots of exercise and need to be watched around smaller pets.

The pekingese is a very lazy breed of dog because of its, well, breeding. They were a favorite of Chinese royalty in ancient times because of their small stature. Often, they would be placed in the sleeves of a royal to keep the royal's arms warm. They have long flowing fur that makes them almost look like a mini lion.

The chihuahua is a very popular dog in the U.S. among the well-off women. They are small enough to fit into a woman's purse! They come in all sorts of colors and with spots! The dog's temperament depends on the owner's temperament. They are a nervous breed, but very loving. They love to burrow into their little "dens," where it is cool and safe.

The basset hound is an adorable medium-sized dog that loves animals and people, including children! They are very patient and have great noses. They were originally meant to hunt rabbits. Now, they are almost lazy, but still need their exercise. Quite stubborn, they can be hard to train. But a gentle, patient hand will be great for a basset hound.

The Siberian husky is one of the well-known sled dogs. A very hard-working dog, they need their exercise very much. They are very smart, but still can be hard to train for their desire to be head dog. They can be trained to be a good family dog, though, if trained well as a young puppy.
